3 Minute Wonder

What is a 3 Minute Wonder?:

A 3 Minute Wonder is a short 'Channel 4' programme, they are aired in the middle of the channels prime time schedule and they lasts roughly 3 Minutes. These programs are to give new filmmakers the chance to show their work to a large audience and get involved with the UK film industry. Channel 4 offers the filmmakers £4000 and their assistance to  make their shorts. These shorts are then aired at 7.55pm every weekday. Topics such as domestic abuse or synesthesia are usually put into these shorts, as well as many other topics which are not in the public eye.

This 3MW is part of a topic named 'This is our Youth'. I like this three minute wonder because of the topic it's about and the fact that this 'craze' of walking backwards is made out to be real. It seems like a real documentary and the reaction from 'MC Backbone' seemed very real.

I enjoyed this 3MW because of how the man in the video (Karl Pilkington) talked about the subject 'life', although what he is saying is true, he is also giving the documentary a funny side, this made it more enjoyable to watch for me.

I liked this 3MW because of how the artist in the video (Blak Le Rat) talks about street art and how he had been making stencils since the 1980's in Paris. He also explains about how he enjoys people admiring his work which is in the street. He tells us that Greek art, Roman art and Pop art have influenced him in what he makes his street art about/look like. He then goes on to explain a little more about street art and what it does for people.

This 3MW is part of the 'This is our Youth'. This was one of my favorite documentaries because even though the subject wasn't true they still made a really good documentary, for example the interviews were really well acted and seemed very real. The rivalry between the two 'crews' is very funny and for that reason I enjoyed it.

Out of all the 3MW I chose, this is the most serious one. It is about a man who has been sentenced to death, and he explains his reasons on why he thinks the death penalty is wrong, he says that once he is executed all of his pain and suffering is over but what is left behind (his family and friends) are the ones who really have to suffer. But I found the subject very interesting.

Market Research:

For my market research on documentaries I had to see how many hours in a 24 hour time block that documentaries are on. We had to do it for two channels. My two channels were BBC 2 and Channel 4, overall on the both the channels there was around 9 hours of documentaries in that 24 hours, that as a percentage would be 37.5%.

Below is how I worked out my percentage:

BBC 2; 545 minutes of documentary divided by 60 = 9 hours divided by 24 times 100  = 37.5%
Channel 4; 550 minutes of documentary  divide by 60 = 9 hours divided by 24 times 100 = 37.5%
